Horticulturist / Plant Biologist

We are currently looking for an excited and detail oriented individual to join our Production Team, as a Horticulturist / Plant Biologist.

Minimum requirements

  • 4 year B.Sc degree in Horticulture, Plant Biology or Botany; KPU Horticulture diploma graduates or with similar educational background •    At least 2 years of work experience in a crop growing environment where flowers are critical (Min 5,000 sq.ft indoor/ greenhouse; or 2 acres of outdoor preferred).


Roles & Responsibilities

  • Reporting to Production Manager, you will execute and implement an Integrated Pest Management protocol, monitor health to enhance overall yields, and help reduce production costs.
  • Identify R&D projects and make proposal to senior management, and propose status reports throughout life cycle of each project. Manage projects through to commercial implementation
  • Maintain exceptional attention to achieve consistent high quality and yield
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert; monitor health of plants, and train production staff to identify and avoid potential issues; identify and implement necessary measures for improvement
  • Identify and evaluate various input materials & suppliers such as nutrients
  • Determine composition of plant nutrient mix (fertigation) and ensure proper monitoring and record keeping
  • Complete documentation of various parameters throughout growth cycle, for evaluation and to make necessary adjustments prior to next growth cycle
  • Identify potential problems that may affect plant health and/or production, and their root cause; and implement necessary corrective actions and preventive measures
  • Work with Quality Assurance Person (QAP) Manager to develop and implement new SOPs and training of all production staff in various production techniques
  • Work with QAP Manager to ensure all activities are conducted as per Good Production Practices
  • (GPP) including sanitation and hygiene
  • Wherever necessary, prepare technical reports for management, clients, or for presentation either at conferences or for publication in industry specific journals
  • Assist QAP during inspections and audits by Regulatory agencies and auditors from 3rd party certification agencies.


Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Any experience with Cannabis and the MMAR program is a positive.
  • An understanding of growing in Inert Mediums for Indoor Cultivation.
  • Thorough knowledge of plant health; plant diseases; plant treatment processes and various options related to successfully growing cannabis plants in a controlled environment
  • Previous experience in R&D, and or QA regulated environment {Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Good Production Practices (GPP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)}
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, high level of accountability, integrity, and confidentiality
  • Strong expertise in mold and pest prevention without the use of commercial pesticides
  • Any certification or experience in Pharmaceutical or Quality Assurance, within highly regulated environment would be considered an exceptional asset
  • Must not have criminal convictions or arrests involving drug related offence (a criminal record check with RCMP will be required prior to any offer being made)
  • Knowledge of ACMPR regulations from Health Canada, will be considered an asset
  • Strong organization skills, including the ability to manage time, and to set priorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to communicate directly and successfully with cross-functional teams
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and maintain a successful working relationship with diverse individuals and groups
  • Ability to work in teams as well as in individual capacity with minimum supervision
  • Proficient in Computers including MS Office and basic computer applications
