Our Tropical Green Smoothie recipe is a perfect breakfast, snack, or dessert!

Now that spring has arrived, we thought a tropical green smoothie would be the perfect drink to enjoy. Even if we have been experiencing more showers than sunny days this May, we should still be able to celebrate the warmth that is fast approaching us. While we still see the rain outside, we can at least try to imagine ourselves with a cold beverage on a warm sunny day.

An Easier Way to Eat Fruits and Vegetables

Maybe you don’t consider yourself a fruit and veggie fanatic, so you have converted into a smoothie connoisseur. When blended well, green smoothies can be easily digested and an easy way to get your suggested servings of fruits and vegetables. Many nutrients are absorbed when drinking a green smoothie. As soon as the contents are blended, the cells in the fruits and vegetables begin to burst in your mouth, allowing you to immediately digest valuable and much-needed nutrients. This fruity and oh-so-delicious nutrient-packed smoothie is guaranteed to keep you feeling full and energized all day long.

Greens that are Good for Everyone

Spinach belongs to the same family as beetroot, quinoa, and chard. We share a similar taste profile with these other vegetables, in addition to tons of nutrients and antioxidants. Spinach has many benefits, including eye health, preventing cancer, and reducing blood pressure levels. While spinach is a favoured green, it is essential to consume in moderation so that our bodies can metabolize it. Dark leafy greens like spinach provide calcium, vitamin K, phosphorus, and magnesium, which all play a role in maintaining good bone health. These vegetables also reduce the risk of cancer and chronic disease. Similarly, kale contains plenty of nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, iron and a wide array of other minerals to help the body combat health problems. The antioxidants in kale can help remove unwanted toxins from the body while also reducing various cancer types.

Growing Trend of Smoothies

The increasingly popular smoothie trend is so prominent and marketed as a healthy food because blending fruits and veggies might just be the easiest way to fulfill dietary needs. Smoothies are consumed by many people due to their customizable, portable, and effortlessly simple way to ingest greens. The healthiness of this beverage is determined mainly by the ingredients added, which is why we suggest a variety of whole foods and healthy fats. A good smoothie should contain a variety of foods. This is why we recommend, at the minimum, two tablespoons of fat, 1 cup of fruit, 1 cup of proteins, 1-2 cups of greens, and one tablespoon of seeds.

Alternative Ingredients

The ever-growing popularity of smoothies is a result of endless opportunities for customization. If you’re not a fan of the ingredients mentioned above, don’t worry because they can be swapped out for a similar and just as tasty alternative. Below we have listed some options for you to consider when creating your tropical green smoothie.

Spinach- If you’re not a fan of spinach, we recommend using kale instead. Before adding it to a blender, we suggest blanching the kale for three minutes. Next, transfer to a bowl of cold water. Once the excess water is drained, and the kale is pressed dry, you may add it to your blender. This step will make it easier to digest and blend for an even consistency.

Water or Milk- If you’re looking to add an extra fruity and tropical taste to your smoothie, then we suggest swapping your liquids for orange juice. If you are considering this switch, we do recommend freshly squeezed orange juice. Store-bought orange juice contains nearly two times the calories and sugar, so if you’re looking to keep calories down, then you might want to consider squeezing the oranges yourself.

Ripe Fruits- The key to a great smoothie is fresh ingredients. Using frozen fruit makes it so effortlessly easy to whip up a smoothie anytime. Frozen fruit also lasts longer, so no need to worry about your ingredients getting spoiled. You can use fresh fruit, but this recipe calls for frozen fruit to give your smoothie that nice thick yet creamy texture. Now, if you want more fluid consistency, we recommend fresh fruit instead.

Chia Seeds- There are tons of seeds you can add to your smoothie. Our recipe calls for chia seeds because they are the most versatile option; however, you can substitute flax seeds, hemp seeds, or pumpkin seeds. If you’re questioning whether seeds are a good option for smoothies, we would like to mention that seeds are super high in essential fatty acids, including omega-3 and often plant-based omega-6, as well as being high in antioxidants. You can easily add tons of seeds to your drink without worrying about altering the taste.

Additional Toppings- This smoothie is entirely customizable for your liking. If you’re looking for something more protein-rich, then we recommend adding a scoop of protein powder to keep you full for longer.
